The ways in which different healthcare professionals can work in an integrated manner with a person in pain to develop a self-management approach are also explored.

Preparing For Pain Self-Management

By the end of AWARD 2, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the value of people living with pain taking a self-management approach to their pain.
  2. Conduct a psychosocial assessment with a person in pain using validated scales and a Socratic style of interviewing.
  3. Create a case formulation with a person in pain to explain how biological, psychological and social factors have contributed to their experience of pain and its impact on their lives.
  4. Develop a comprehensive self-management intervention with an interdisciplinary team and a person seeking help with their pain.

CPM 6: Introducing Pain Self-Management

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Explain key differences between acute and chronic pain and their implications for treatment.
  2. Highlight the key reasons for offering a self-management approach for people in chronic pain.
  3. Engage the person in pain in exploring the potential benefits of pain self-management as a treatment strategy.
  4. Detail the complementary roles of the health care provider and the person in pain.

 

CPM 7: Assessing for pain self-management

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Apply key communication strategies to engage the person in pain in a collaborative assessment process.
  2. Administer and interpret commonly used and validated pain self-report measures to complement a clinical examination of a person in pain.
  1. Use a Socratic style of interviewing in a pain assessment to draw out the person’s concerns and beliefs about their pain.
  2. Identify psychosocial contributors to a person’s acute pain and risk factors for poor outcomes.

 

CPM 8: Making Sense of Chronic Pain

At the end of this module, you will be better able to:

  1. Illustrate to a person in pain how interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors appear to be contributing to their pain and its impact on their lives.
  1. Develop a case formulation with a person in pain as part of your assessment summary.
  1. Differentiate between a pain diagnosis and a case formulation.
  2. Explain the implications for treatment when using a case formulation.

 

CPM 9: Planning for Pain Self-Management

At the end of this module, you will be better able to:

  1. Develop a comprehensive management plan with the person in pain and a multidisciplinary team using the information from the initial assessment and case formulation.
  2. Explain the proposed pain management plan to the person experiencing pain and how the different members of the interdisciplinary team will contribute.
  3. Prepare the person in pain for their role in the pain management plan.
  4. Specify the expected outcomes from the pain management plan
