By the end of AWARD 3, you will be able to:

  1. Engage a person seeking help with their pain in identifying their desired functional goals.
  2. Explain to a person seeking help with their pain how they could use an activity pacing approach to achieving their functional goals.
  3. Introduce three types of exercise to a person in pain and a home-based exercise plan.
  4. Teach a person seeking help with their pain how they can use a relaxation technique in managing their pain.

Establish a structured approach to problem management with a person in pain.

CPM 10: Setting Goals

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of having functional goals to aim at in pain self-management
  2. Initiate the steps involved in setting specific and meaningful goals with the person in pain
  3. Guide the person in pain in charting their goals in operational terms
  4. Explore, with the person in pain, potential obstacles the person in pain may face in attempting to achieve their goals
  5. Anticipate the roles other pain self-management skills can play in achieving goals

 

CPM 11: Activity Pacing and Exercise

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Introduce activity pacing to a person in pain and its role in achieving functional goals.
  2. Engage a person in pain in planning and applying activity pacing for activities limited by pain.
  3. Demonstrate a basic exercise program to a person in pain
  4. Implement an activity pacing approach to a structured activity and exercise program with a person in pain.

 

CPM 12: Relaxation

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Prepare a person in pain to practice applied relaxation methods as a pain self-management strategy
  2. Rehearse applied relaxation methods with a person in pain as a pain self-management method.
  3. Encourage a person in pain to maintain their practice of applied relaxation in their daily lives.

 

CPM 13: Problem Management

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Examine, with a person in pain, how they might respond to obstacles they face in implementing and maintaining their pain management plans
  2. Contrast helpful and unhelpful ways of managing obstacles to successful pain self-management.
  3. Encourage a person in pain to experiment with their chosen problem-management strategies between appointments.
  4. Reflect on the person in pain’s experiences with their chosen problem-management strategies.
